05.06.09 | Top 5 Reasons Online Classes Rock

Posted in College, Online Degree by David Bonvie

At this point the cat isn’t only out of the bag, as it pertains to online degrees, it’s a full grown lioness on the prowl. Online degrees were once viewed as a gimmicky soiree into the world of higher education, but oh how things have changed.

I must admit, even I was cynical in the late 90’s when the Online degree rage was taking flight. It felt like a scam. Would my degree be worth anything? Would my resume be passed over time and time again because of how I earned my degree? Never did I believe it would be more revered by many hiring managers who believe online recipients are more versatile. These students are viewed as self motivated independent thinkers who are driven to succeed; all traits which transfer nicely in the workplace.

Yes, Online degrees hold value in the marketplace, but it’s the value outside the virtual classroom that attracts many students to an Online degree. Lets take a look at the Top 5 reasons Online classes have become so popular.

1. Comfort: Having the luxury of taking notes with one hand while shoveling in Doritos with the other is pretty sweet indeed. A comfortable environment produces better results.

2. Convenience: No need to worry if your tank is on “E” or traffic is backed up on the interstate to get to school. When you’re at home, you are at school.

3. Flexibility: Lesson plans are available for you to review anytime throughout the week and tests are usually available over a three day period to fit with your busy schedule.

4. Availability: While campuses are restricted to the number of classes they can offer students based on staffing and capital resources, Online degree programs have no such restrictions. The number of classes you can take is practically endless.

5. Time: Most Online classes do not have specific start-up dates and times. You can jump in whenever you like. In addition, if you have the desire, you may complete your class early in most cases. Many eight week classes are completed in 4-6 weeks by ambitious students.

As a single mother, I did not find online classes to be convenient. Having a toddler is hard work especially if the toddler is busy. With online courses you have to do the work within a certain time and by the time you are done running after children all day, you pretty much want to nap when they nap.

Although i think that online class can have their benefits i feel that it it has many down sides to it. If anyone learns like i do i need the one on one interaction from my teach or my other fellow students to learn i am very hands one. With online classes you don’t have that you have to teach yourself everything. Also you don’t get the social part of taking classes in a class room setting. Socializing with other students is a big part in growing, learning and becoming who you are. You don’t get that taking classes online, your almost secluding yourself from the world around you. Technology today inhibits our communication skills and i feel that online classes do just that.

Though certain classes definately are worth taking online, my mathematics classes require in person teaching. I have tried to teach myself the core of an online math class, but without a different point of view by a real person I would not have passed. Online classes leave way too much out of the college experience.

I have taken and is taking online classes. They very convenient for busy students, but not courses should be taken or can be taken online, such as Public Speaking. Everyone’s learning competence is different and if you need to hear and read in order completely comprehend a course; I would suggest that you give it much consideration. Online courses requires self-teaching, disciplining and can be very challenging. Some college online classes are setup to have class discussion with fellow classmates. I am truly enjoying my college experiences.

This summer, I am registered to take 3 online courses. Although I have never taken online classes before, I am very excited to know how this whole deal works. For the past years I tried to avoid them because I’m all about the interaction with other students and asking a question to the instructor to get the answer right away (something that online classes do not offer). The only thing that I don’t like, is the idea of “taking notes with one hand while shoveling in Doritos with the other” within my reach. It might be funny if in future years, statistics show that there is in fact a correlation between obesity and taking online courses :D LOL. Thanks for the points though, they were really helpful; I now feel more confident about my summer schedule as you stated that there is more flexibility with these courses since they can accomodate to fit our needs.

I am pursuing my 4th degree. I have done both on campus and on line classes and I love the on line environment so much better. You can go to class around your schedule- your job, kids, etc instead of missing classes or family time to go to school. Bonus is it is usually cheaper. I agree if you are not self motivated or organized then you wouldnt do well. But It gives you opportunities to go out of state to better schools, without out of state tution and with out having to uproot your life. I love online classes!

They sound great, especially for people who have already been to college and want to learn something new but the downfall is not being able to meet people and create relationships which are very important for most degrees today. Being able to know people and who do go to if you need help or someone with a certain talent that may benefit you is important. How can you know alot of people if you learned from home instead of a classroom.

I wish that all of my classes were offered online.
I would “Jump, Jump, Jump, To It”
I was however able to take one class that was part of my degree program. It gave me the flexibility of being in the comfort of my home. In addition, it allowed me to be there for my children and not miss a minute of their time out of school. Most times parents miss their children’s important days of growing while we are out attempting to enhance our education, to make a better life not only for ourselves, but our children as well. “We definitely need a CHANGE” in our Higher Education system when it comes to online degree seeking educators, not only for the betterment of ourselves, but for “our” children. “CHILDREN FIRST?”

I AM CURRENTLY TAKING ONLINE CLASSES FROM SANTA MONICA COLLEGE. IT IS GREAT! THE TEACHER DEFINITELY RESPOND TO YOU QUICK. YOU CAN ACTUALLY TALK TO STUDENTS AND GET TOGETHER TO STUDY WITHOUT BEING AFRAID TO ASK.

BUT THE DOWNSIDE IS THAT THE DEADLINES FOR THE ASSIGNMENTS ARE ON FRIDAY, SATURDAY, AND SUNDAY, WHICH ARE THE DAYS THAT MOST STUDENTS WANT TO RELAX.

ALSO…IF YOU LIKE ONLINE CLASSES…DEFINITELY CHECK OUT HYBRID CLASSES!! THEY ARE AWESOME!

Online classes have taught me the ability of self control. I’ve been quite responsible with time management thanks to online classes. People tend to think online classes are simplistic because it involves the student and a computer, however, online classes have proven to be much more difficult because it’s testing your responsiblities, the ability to actually understand the content without an actual instructor in front of you and the ability to actually read the material without the access of a fellow student. Online classes are breaking the glass ceiling of mediocrisy and showing many who have and/or have not taken it that it is not to be taken quite lightly.
