10.08.08 | Four Places to Find Emergency College Funds

I grew up like most kids, loving the October Halloween month. I had a license to be bad and wasn’t afraid to use it. Snickers, KitKat’s, Reese’s Peanut Butter cups, & Twix were the sweet objects of my affection. And yes, my waistline reflected my sinful indulgence, but I wasn’t trying to impress anyone. Today October holds a much different feel from those young carefree days; a feel more in line with those post chocolate celebratory belly aches, given all the economic woes plaguing our county. And while my waistline is now much thinner, so is my hairline. Stress surrounding the greenback plagues us all.

“I need money for school, please help,” is a common phrase I hear from students each day. And when you come to the realization your money tree has been chopped down by Paul Bunyan it’s a terrifying reality check. I’ve been there myself. I just wish I had the ‘08 version of me to advise the ‘94 version of me, but I digress. I want you to benefit from my infinite wisdom. Here are my “Fab Four” ways to get those funds you need!

Private Student loans

Perhaps the only good thing surrounding an economic downturn is the cost of borrowing decreases, which means lower interest rates for you and me, which makes private loan options more attractive. It’s important to note that most students do require a co-signer for a private loan. Funds get sent directly to you and are great for everyday school expenses. You can also borrow up to $45,000 and repayment does not begin until after you graduate.

Line of Credit

Bank of America offers a $25,000 line of credit for qualified applicants. Decision in 10 minutes and the funds get deposited directly into your checking or savings account. Best of all you don’t need excellent credit or collateral. Another great perk is you can re-borrow money you’ve already paid back if you get in a pinch.

To apply for the Bank of America Line of Credit (click here).

Credit Cards

Great to have for emergency situations. Also, depending on the card you can score some pretty sweet rewards points such as cash back on gasoline or even World of Warcraft online game time. The Citi mtvU card, our Editors Choice, rewards students for using credit wisely and getting good grades. A lot of cards also offer exclusive savings on merchandise and restaurants as well.

Scholarships

I saved the best for last. We hold monthly scholarship giveaways for students. Students love it because you don’t need to write an essay or have a certain GPA to enter, but that doesn’t mean everyone has an equal chance of winning. By completing point activities you can accrue additional points which can then be used toward a monthly scholarship drawing. By the way, if you are already a scholarshippoints.com member use this bonus code FOURSTEPS for 20 magical points, and don’t forget to enter this month’s big 10K giveaway – cha-ching!

To become a scholarshippoints.com member (click here).

I hope at least one of these options satisfies you like a king size snickers, and I hope you get the funds you need for school. I want to turn those tricks into treats. Then we can all do the Monster Mash and won’t have to wonder whatever happened to the Transylvania twist!

Thanks for the info. Right now I’m trying to obtain a private student loan. I dont have the best credit because during my freshmen year in college while trying to pay for school I made a stupid decision to get a credit card. That didn’t work out so well for me. I was working but I was working on campus and most of my paycheck went directly to paying my tuition bill leaving me a measly $50 every MONTH. My parents are divorced, my father refuses to help me pay for college, or anything else for that matter even though he STILL claims me as a dependent on his taxes and gets money for that. He also refuses to be a cosigner on a loan for me even though he has amazing credit. My mother had to fill bankruptcy for personal reasons and her cosigning wouldn’t be helpful. I am currently taking classes at the Academy of Art University online and they have blocked me from my classes b/c I do not have any money to give them on the remaining balance. When I spoke to the financial aid office they said that there was nothing they could do to help me if my parents wont apply for a parent plus loan. So here I am on the search…one private student loan I tried to apply for told me that they could not give loans at this time due to the current economic state…what is the world coming to?

I am going to win this scholarship so I can create a successful life.

Those are some great options but considering the credit card which is good but also has flaws. I am 18 years old and a freshman in college and I was thinking about applying for a credit card but I was thinking to myself after “trying” to pay my loans back on time with the result of low-income with my parents my credit will be bad because of not paying my loans back “in time”. If I don’t pay back in time wouldn’t that interfer with my chances of getting accepted and approved for a credit card?

Not to sound overly negative or anything, but students who wish to pay for college and were not granted any assistance from FASFA, generally have to have to apply for a private loan. Problem is, although the interest rates are lower, loans are not being passed out so easily. Secondly, If you are between the ages of 18-21, most likely, you have what is called NEW CREDIT, which requires you to use your parents credit as a co-signer. BUT if you are like me, whose parent debt is more than there income, there again, you run into a problem. CREDIT CARDS are generally a trap. Therefore your only real option to go to school are scholarships.
Another wards, If you’re broke and your parents are broke, go to school for free.
If you’re family is loaded with cash, mommy and daddy will take care of it.
If you’re like me, the average white, middle class American, who isn’t supported by mom and dad, face it, until this ridiculous system cleans itself up, YOUR SCREWED.
Good luck finding what you need for school. Hopefully you won’t have loans as big as mortgages to pay off after graduation.

I understand there are four places to find emergency money but its hard to go to those sources when you come from a poor family and have bad credit. Fafsa does give me some money but its not enough when I have rent and books to pay. I would have to work to have money to eat so my grades suffer thus not qualifying for certain funds. I can’t get a loan because my credit is bad and my parents don’t have credit. It just seems like people make it seem like its easy to get funding for school when its not.

Loans are just about the only way to fund an education these days. The sad reality though, you still have to pay back the money borrowed, and unless the jobs are out there when you get close to graduating, it just becomes another big bill with little way to pay for it.
Scholarships are a great way to supplement the cost of education, but the ones that really help are few and far between, and there are so many fake offers out there, you can spend as much time applying, writing essays, participating in programs, etc as you spend on homework, and still come up with nothing with try agian next year.
Yes this is the voice of experience talking.
One can only hope that they can land a decent size scholarship or grant in time. (I am still hoping)

It’s really frustrating to know what you want to do in life and how to get there, but just not having the money to get you the education you need in order to excel. That’s why I’m glad for sites like this one. Like they say, exhaust all “free money” sources before turning to others. Let’s all hope for the best. :]

The line of credit through Bank of America is not a good idea either. Why would you borrow money that you have already paid back. the purpose of paying is to get out of debt, not to accumulate more interest fees.

    October 28th, 2008 | #

  163. Ava says

The private student loans are not a good way to go if you have trouble not shopping. If I was applying for a private loan I would rather the money be sent to the college to be sure that all the fees and tuition is paid. If there is left over money I would like the school to return it in a check.

I don’t consider credit cards a good option. Yea there great for the time you need the money but they also come with a monthly bill so if you can’t handle the bills you already have, a credit card isn’t the answer. especially if you wont be able to put more then the minimum payment because they with keep adding on interest putting you in more debt.

WHAT ARE BEST CREDIT CARDS FOR COLLEGE KIDS

    October 29th, 2008 | #

  173. M. George says

This is all well and good, but realistically speaking students aren’t able to get most of the benefits above unless they have a co-signer. The Bank of America Credit line sounds really nice as well, but I’m sure it’s the same case. I wish there were other resources for students like me. I attend a commuter school with no dorms and with few resources for out-of-state student. Also, in my earlier university years, I was never able to find an effective co-signer. No worries though, I made it past some very difficult times successfully and triumphantly. However, at this point, as a senior, I’m looking into other options like fellowships and so on for graduate school. Preparation is really essential to this process. Yet, for younger college kids I wish there were more resources… Scholarships are a good option as well, and if one prepares beforehand, they might have a really good chance at winning scholarships they’ve applied for. Essay is usually the best choice. However, what happens to students who don’t know their options or who don’t have parents who have ever been through the process of university and scholarships/loans or FinAid before? There must be something for them as well… Cheers,

    Yours Truly,
    M. George…

But really, some of these issues can be avoided by picking a good university to attend. So know your school before you enroll, and depending on where you go, college will be a very good experience even if finances are low; because attending a resourceful university is everything…

Private loans can be great in a pinch, but be aware of how drastically interest rates can change and how expensive origination fees are, if you take out a $16,000.00 loan, for example, fees tacked onto it may be upwards of a couple thousands dollars–I learned this the hard way from a Bank of America loan specifically for students and education. I also needed a co-signer.

I am finding it difficult this first semester in college. Money doesn’t go as far as I wish it would. Finding a job also isn’t what I expected. Finding money for school is tough. I think that scholarships is the best way to go. Scholarshippoints is a great way for college students like myself to earn. However, I’m still tring to keep my grades and aimming for the seemingly impossible 3.5 GPA. Loans and credit cards are good but no one wants to graduate and be in debt.

Great ideas…yes…workable and reality for the masses…not even possible…Private Student Loans are great if you qualify, if you have good credit or a really good credit worthy co-signer. But..if you don’t they turn you down, private student loans are not that easy to get a hold of. Open ended loans up to 25,000…well that does depend on how much money you make every month and what your credit looks like, so if you are like many college students you don’t make squat each month because trying to balance school and a job are not easy at all…and credit score…let’s see…really…most college students don’t have one yet. Ok that brings us to credit cards, has anyone really looked at the fine print on those things? Credit card companies can and often do change terms without notifying card holders. And for anyone screaming “they can’t do that!” check out that little block of super fine print on the back of the application. They can and they do, which means you end up with a bigger bill than you ever imagined and you’re paying every month getting no where all the time. Scholarships are great, but even they have a draw back. For every scholarship out there, there are thousands upon thousands of very needy and deserving students who compete for them. None of these options are really a “quick” fix. Heading back to college to finish my graduate studies after working for a while really shows you what you’re up against. There is nothing easy or quick about the process of college or getting the funds to get through it all, but it is worth it and in the long run where you end up is better qualified to compete in marketing your skills to an employer of your choice.
